Autumn is the season that does the most damage to Galway roofs. The summer growth is over, the leaves are falling, and the first Atlantic storms of the season arrive with heavy rain and high winds. Most autumn roof leaks do not start on the roof at all. They start in a blocked gutter or a choked downpipe. This guide explains what to clean, what to check and what to fix before the worst of the weather arrives.
Why Autumn Is the Worst Season for Gutters in Galway
Galway sits on the Atlantic coast, and the city's exposed suburbs such as Salthill, Knocknacarra and Renmore take the full force of autumn storms. When gale-force winds arrive, the rain comes almost horizontally, and a gutter that works fine in summer suddenly overflows at the first downpour.
The problem is leaf fall. Sycamore, ash and beech trees shed their leaves from late September, and a single tree can fill a 4-metre gutter run in a few weeks. Wet leaves pack down into a solid mat that a hose cannot shift, and this mat holds the water against the fascia board and roof edge. From there it finds its way under the felt, along the wall and into the attic.
What a Blocked Gutter Does to Your Roof
A blocked gutter does not stay a gutter problem for long. When water backs up, it overflows at the roofline and runs down the wall, soaking the external render and the wall ties behind it. In older Galway houses with solid stone walls, this water can travel sideways into the bedrooms below.
Overflowing water also rots the fascia and soffit boards, rusts the back of the gutter where you cannot see it, and saturates the roof deck at the eaves. That is why a leaking roof in November is so often caused by a gutter that blocked in October. The roof itself never had a problem.

The Autumn Gutter Cleaning Checklist
You should clean your gutters at least twice a year, and the autumn clean is the important one. Do it before the main leaf fall starts, ideally in the first half of September, so the gutters are empty when the storms arrive.
- Clear leaves and debris by hand or with a gutter scoop, working from the downpipe outlet toward the far end
- Flush the gutters with a hose to reveal slow points and check the fall toward the downpipe
- Clear the downpipe outlets and hopper heads, where most blockages form
- Check the brackets and joints for movement, and reseat any sections that have dropped
- Look for moss growth, which holds water against the metal and speeds up rust
If the downpipe is already blocked, a hosepipe from the top will not fix it. You may need a drain rod or a gutter vacuum from the ground. For a full breakdown of repairs and replacement options, see our gutter and downpipe care guide for Galway homes.
Check the Roof Edge and Valleys Before the Storms
While you are working at the roofline, look at the areas that catch the most debris. Valleys, the internal angles where two roof slopes meet, collect leaves even when the gutters are clear, and a blocked valley can back water up under the slates within a single heavy shower.
Check the verge and the eaves for lifted felt, missing mortar and slipped slates. In Salthill and other exposed areas, a single missing slate can let enough wind-driven rain in to soak the insulation for weeks. Small repairs are far cheaper in September than in the middle of a December storm, and our roof repair service covers exactly this type of pre-winter work.

Prepare Downpipes and Drainage for Heavy Rain
Downpipes carry the water from the gutters to the ground, and they are the part most people forget. Check that the pipe is fixed firmly to the wall, that the shoe at the bottom is clear, and that water actually drains away from the house rather than pooling against the wall.
On older Galway properties with cast-iron downpipes, check the joints where sections meet. A cracked joint can spray water against the wall for years without being noticed, and the resulting damp is often blamed on the roof. If your downpipes are rusted or damaged, our guttering services in Galway cover replacement and repair.
When to Call a Roofer Before Winter
You do not need to climb on the roof to decide whether to call in a professional. From the ground or a ladder, look for slipped or missing slates, lifted ridge tiles, moss-covered sections, and any sagging in the roofline. If your chimney flashing looks lifted, or the leadwork around a dormer is worn, these are jobs for a roofer rather than a weekend DIY attempt.
If you live in an exposed area such as Salthill, Clifden or the outskirts of Galway city, a pre-winter inspection is a sensible investment. It is far cheaper than an emergency callout during the first storm of the season, and it gives you time to book the work at a convenient time. Our emergency roofing service is there for the jobs that cannot wait, but the best time to fix a roof is before the rain starts.
If you are not confident working at height, or your gutters have not been cleaned for a while, get a professional in. Call 089 944 0642 for a free quote on gutter cleaning, roof repairs or a pre-winter inspection anywhere in Galway.
