Solar panels are one of the most popular home improvements in Ireland right now, and Galway is no exception. But before you sign with an installer, the roof under the panels matters as much as the panels themselves. A solar array is expected to last 25 years or more, and it is only as good as the roof it sits on. This guide covers what Galway homeowners should check before installation, how panels are mounted, and how to avoid the leaks that give solar a bad name.

Is Your Roof Strong Enough for Solar Panels?

Most pitched roofs in Galway can take solar panels. A typical domestic array weighs around 250 to 400 kg once the mounting rails and panels are up, spread across the roof slope, so the structure rarely struggles. The bigger question is the condition of the roof covering itself.

Slates and tiles should be sound, with no cracked, slipped or missing units. The underlay felt beneath them should be intact, and battens should be firmly fixed. A roofer will spot problems in minutes that a solar installer might not notice, because their job is the panels, not the roof.

How Solar Panels Are Mounted on Irish Roofs

Almost all pitched roof systems use rafter hooks. The installer lifts a tile or slate, fixes a stainless steel hook to the rafter, and slides the tile back over it. A rail is then clipped across the hooks and the panels bolt onto the rail. When done properly, only the hook fixings penetrate the roof covering.

Those fixings and the flashings around them are where leaks start. Every penetration must be sealed correctly, and the tile must sit back in place without being cracked. If a hook is poorly positioned or a slate is forced back down, water finds a way in over the following months.

Do Solar Panels Cause Roof Leaks?

No, not when they are installed properly. The vast majority of leaks after a solar install come from bad workmanship on the mountings, or from a roof that was already failing before the panels went on. Panels do not puncture the roof by themselves, and a well fitted system actually protects the slates beneath it.

The risk is that a solar installer's warranty covers the panels, not the roof. If a leak appears, the panel company points at the roof and the roofer points at the panels. That is why it pays to have the roof checked and, if needed, repaired by a roofer before the panels are fitted.

Slate Roofs and Solar Panels in Galway

Galway has more than its share of natural slate roofs, particularly in older homes across Salthill, Oranmore and Knocknacarra. Natural slate is a brittle material, and lifting and refitting it around rafter hooks needs a careful hand. Cracked slates around mountings are one of the most common faults we see after solar installs.

Ask your installer how they handle slate, and whether a roofer will be on site to cut and refit the slates around the hooks. On a slate roof that is not a nice to have, it is essential. The same care applies to old concrete tiles that have become porous with age; they break easily when lifted.

Replace the Roof Before or After Solar?

If your roof covering is near the end of its life, the cheap route is a trap. Fitting panels to a roof that needs replacement in five years means paying twice: once to take the panels down, and once to put them back after the new roof is laid. Panels coming down and going back up adds thousands to a roofing job.

The sensible sequence is to replace the roof first, then fit the panels on a covering that is known to be sound. Our roof replacement cost guide gives a realistic picture of what a new roof costs in Galway before you commit to solar. If the roof is in decent shape, a full roof repair before installation is usually enough.

Galway Weather and Panel Warranties

Galway roofs face Atlantic winds and driven rain that much of the country never sees. Mounting systems must be rated for the exposure of your site, and fixings should be stainless steel, not galvanised, for coastal areas. Salt air corrodes cheap hardware quickly.

Check what the installer actually warranties: the panels, the mountings, and the roof penetrations. A 25 year panel warranty is standard, but the roof leak cover is what protects you when flashing fails after a winter storm. If the worst happens, our emergency roofing team covers storm damage across the county.

Get the Roof Checked Before You Sign

Solar is a strong investment for Galway homes, and the SEAI grants available in 2026 make it more affordable than ever. But the roof has to be ready first. Have a roofer inspect the roof before you commit, fix what needs fixing, and make sure the solar contract states clearly who is responsible for the roof penetrations.

We inspect roofs across Galway city and county, from Salthill to Tuam and out to Clifden, and we will tell you honestly whether your roof is ready for panels or needs work first. Call 087 338 6136 for a free quote and a straight answer.
